Cell Unit Security Panels

High-Security
Cell Unit Windows & Panels

Introduction to Security Panels

Security panels play a vital role in maintaining the integrity and safety of secure environments, including prisons, police stations, courts, forensic clinics, and airports. Designed to withstand forced entry, vandalism, and unauthorised entry, high-security cell unit windows provide a robust physical barrier where risk levels are highest. Their construction incorporates advanced materials and techniques to ensure that every entry point remains secure, even under extreme conditions.

Each security panel is tested and certified in accordance with the demanding requirements of secure facilities, offering proven protection where it matters most. Whether installed in new build projects or as part of a refurbishment, these panels are designed to integrate seamlessly with existing structures, providing a reliable solution for high-risk areas. Their effectiveness in preventing unauthorised entry and resisting vandalism makes them a key component in the security strategy of police stations, prisons, and courts across the UK.

By choosing proven security panels that are specifically designed for these challenging environments, facility managers and architects can ensure that every cell, corridor, and entry point remains protected, supporting the overall safety and security of staff, detainees, and visitors alike.

High Security Products

Luxcrete is the UK’s longest-established supplier of high-security glass and ferro-concrete cell windows and rooflights. Luxcrete manufacture a comprehensive range of products widely used in police stations, prisons, and courts across the country.

Custody Suite Cell Windows for Police Stations

Developed to satisfy performance requirements set by the Home Office in compliance with the Police Building Design Guide (PDBG), including static load testing up to 165kn/m². Modern cell windows often lack traditional bars, instead using toughened glass and internal grilles to eliminate anchor points and reduce the risk of suicide attempts or break-out attempts from the cell side. Security cell windows typically use narrow vents or perforated panels for ventilation that remain impenetrable. There are four recommended standard format cell windows available in landscape and portrait configurations, with the most commonly specified size being 1891mm wide x 1120mm high in landscape format. Security cell windows utilise specialised laminates composed of layers of polycarbonate, glass, and acrylic to absorb high-impact blows and withstand torsional loads, static loads, and other mechanical stresses over time. A high proportion of projects require custody suite cell windows to be manufactured to specific sizes and configurations. Luxcrete can cast panels to meet individual project requirements – please refer to our Technical Department for further details.

Key Features of Luxcrete Security Cell Windows

PDBG-compliant designs suitable for new-build police custody suites

Static load performance tested up to 165kN/m²

Laminated security glazing with polycarbonate, glass, and acrylic layers

Narrow ventilation apertures or perforated panels for secure airflow

Pre-cast ferro-concrete construction for long-term durability. Laminated glass has a tough plastic interlayer that holds the structure together even when cracked, preventing easy access. Security glazing, especially laminated glass and safety film, holds shattered glass together to prevent dangerous shards from scattering. When security cell glazing breaks, the interlayer keeps fragments in place to prevent inmates from using shards as weapons.

Custom sizes, profiles, and fixing methods available

Suitable for refurbishment and retrofit projects

Standard concrete colour – grey – other colours available.

Sandblasted lenses are available for increased obscurity.

Stainless steel and welded reinforcement options are available.

Standard fixings – Hilti type sleeve anchor thru bolts to jambs.

Trowelled surface – external face. Glass projects – nom 3mm internal face. Security window film strengthens the pane and holds shards together in a safety net when broken, preventing injury.

Refurbishment / Non PBDG Cell Windows with alternate fixings.

Luxcrete's Police Building Design Guide (PBDG) compliant custody suite cell window is suitable for all new build projects, but there are many refurbishment schemes to existing police stations where the PBDG window design cannot be incorporated. Openings and structures may not be compatible with the PBDG design, thus requiring replacement cell windows to fit within existing apertures. Luxcrete can manufacture cell windows with arched profile heads, monolithic cills & jambs, projecting reinforcement bars or threaded sockets for cleat fixing to existing reveals.

High Security Rooflights for Forced Entry Resistance

Luxcrete window constructions are also commonly used as high-security rooflights over custody and cell areas. Codes CU/R165/75 and CU/R200/75 provide tested resistance to forced entry where overhead access presents a security issue.
