Smoke Outlet Panels

Smoke Outlet Panels

Smoke outlet panels, glazed or non glazed, can either be supplied pre cast or cast on site by skilled Luxcrete personnel. These panels consist of glass lenses set in a reinforced concrete framework and can be designed for various applications, including pavement lights and rooftop panels. Pre-casting usually speeds up site installation and allows work to continue even during very cold weather. In situ casting enables larger areas to be formed and is more suitable for accommodating site falls and levels. However, careful consideration must be given to the size and shape of all panels to minimise the possibility of shrinkage, and proper sealing is essential to prevent water ingress. Our technical department is available to provide further advice, with premium and customised glazing and finishes available to blend with existing decor and meet specific structural requirements.

A selection of typical joint and edge details are available and variations are of course possible. The proper design and construction of adjacent structures and finishes by others is essential to avoid the possibility of water bypassing the perimeter seal.

Where light transmission is unnecessary, plain surface panels with concrete infills can be supplied for horizontal or vertical smoke outlets such as those for ducting or shafts from lower basements.

The top surface of the panels has a trowelled finish incorporating carborundum grains for added slip resistance.

Regulations stipulate that smoke outlet panels must be identified; Luxcrete non-ferrous metal identification plates must be cast into the panel surface and brass demarcation strips can also be supplied if required.

A construction has been specially designed for use where the surface finish of the smoke outlet panel must match the surrounding area (see details with prefix SG). This construction supports the General Contractors finishes. Fire Brigade approval must be obtained whenever this construction is to be used. Luxcrete can provide a test panel to permit the General Contractor to apply the finishes to allow the Fire Brigade to witness a physical test.

All other constructions have been tested by the London Fire and Civil Defence Authority (LFCDA) for use as smoke outlets but special application must be made when considering heavy duty types P165/165 and S165/165. Luxcrete constructions other than the solid-grid type (S.G.) can be designed to be removed to provide access to machinery etc.

Rigorous load tests conducted on a wide selection of Luxcrete pavement lights and smoke outlet panels have been carried out by Building Research Establishment (BRE) Garston. The panels withstood load-bearing tests in excess of 75kN. These results are deemed to satisfy the requirements of the London District Surveyors Association in lieu of submitted calculations, for a 75kN ultimate load for accidental vehicular loading to pavement lights and smoke outlet panels.

For this loading with clear spans of up to 2.4 meters it is necessary for bearings to be provided to two opposite sides with a minimum width of 100mm, except where it is required that the perimeter edges of the panel are rebated, when a minimum bearing width of 125mm must be provided. Luxcrete are able to provide proof of design that our constructions can safely sustain the specified concentrated loading. Please refer to our Technical advisory Department.

Design and Functionality

The design and functionality of smoke outlet panels are crucial for ensuring effective smoke ventilation and compliance with safety requirements, especially in basement areas. These panels are specifically designed to facilitate the safe escape of smoke and toxic fumes in the event of a fire, helping to protect both the building and its occupants. Selecting the correct panel involves careful consideration of factors such as panel size, type, construction method, and how well the panel integrates with the current surroundings of the site.

Luxcrete's technical department can provide expert advice to help you choose the most suitable outlet panels for your project. Their team will take into account the unique needs of your building, offering guidance on whether pre-cast or site-cast panels are best, and ensuring that all panels are manufactured and supplied to meet the highest quality standards.

Professional installation services are available to ensure that each panel is fitted correctly and in accordance with all relevant safety standards. The Luxcrete installation team can also provide ongoing advice on maintenance, including regular cleaning and inspection, to ensure that the panels remain in optimal condition and continue to provide vital smoke ventilation. Comprehensive data sheets and technical information are readily available, offering detailed insights into each product and its installation requirements.
